Project Update

Sudan Extends Electricity Grid to Darfur
The Sudanese Electricity Transmission Company (SETCO) has taken a significant step toward expanding the countryโ€™s electricity grid by signing an agreement with Shanghai Electric Group Company. The agreement, signed in Shanghai, China, focuses on linking the 220kV Babanusa-Adila power line to Sudanโ€™s national electricity grid.

The Babanusa-Adila power line, stretching from Babanusa in West Kordofan to Adila in East Darfur, will be constructed by Shanghai Electric at a cost of $50 million. The project is funded by the Jeddah branch of the Islamic Development Bank (ISDB) and is expected to be completed within 24 months.

Expanding Access to Darfur
This project marks a critical milestone in Sudanโ€™s efforts to extend reliable electricity to the Darfur region. Plans are also underway to further extend the power line from Adila through Ed Daein to Nyala in South Darfur. An agreement for this extension is expected to be signed early next year, with funding from Beijing, Arabic funds, and private donors.

Addressing Electricity Tariffs
The project comes at a time when the Sudanese government is addressing challenges in the energy sector. During a recent meeting with the parliamentary Energy Committee, Minister of Water Resources, Irrigation, and Electricity Mutaz Mousa highlighted that the current electricity tariffs do not cover production costs. The cabinet has proposed a 100% increase in tariffs and is initiating a dialogue between state agencies and citizens to find solutions that balance the needs of low-income households and high-consumption sectors.

The 220kV Babanusa-Adila Power Transmission Project is a vital initiative to improve electricity access in Sudan, particularly in the underserved Darfur region. The supply of high-quality power and earthing cables, including copper wire strands and CU/XLPE/PVC cables, ensures the reliability and efficiency of the transmission network. This project not only supports Sudanโ€™s energy infrastructure development but also contributes to economic growth and improved quality of life for its citizens.
